Diagnosis Of Chronic Back Pain

Physical Examination

  • Palpation – The doctor may gently move his hand along the patient’s back to locate any spasms or tenderness.
  • Neurologic Exam – To assess the reflexes, the doctor may manually move hip, knee and big toe of the patient.
  • Range Of Motion Test – Patient may be asked to bend or twist in certain positions. This may help the doctor to understand the postures that cause maximum pain.
  • Leg Raise Test – The doctor may ask the patient to lay on the back and raise one leg as high as possible. If the leg raise causes pain to aggravate, it may be a symptom of an underlying condition.
Imaging Tests

To have a clear view of the bone and the underlying soft tissues, the doctor may ask the patients to get certain imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans or MRI scans.

Treatment For Chronic Back Pain

  • Medication – Painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicines may be recommended by the doctor to alleviate pain and swelling.
  • Physical Therapy – The doctor may recommend patients to consult physical therapist to eliminate tenderness and improve flexibility of the back.
  • Icing And Heating – Patients may also be asked to apply hot and cold packs to stretch the muscles and improve blood flow in the affected area.

If the back pain is due to some other underlying medical condition, surgical intervention may be required.
